Annual Climate Overview & Sea Temperatures

The southwestern coast of Sardinia features a Mediterranean climate, characterized by warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters. While the peak tourism season runs from June to October, Tuerredda's unique microclimate offers interesting conditions for visitors throughout the entire year.

Seasonal Climate Breakdown

☀️ Summer (June – August)

Summer brings hot, dry weather with high solar exposure and minimal rainfall. Temperatures regularly exceed 30°C (86°F) in July and August, while sea temperatures rise from a refreshing 21°C (70°F) in June to a warm 26°C (79°F) in August. This is the busiest time of the year, with the daily carrying-capacity limit of 1,100 visitors reached early every morning. Strong thermal breezes develop in the afternoon, keeping the coast comfortable.

🍂 Autumn (September – November)

Autumn is a transition period. September and October offer excellent beach conditions: the sea remains warm (22°C to 24°C / 72°F to 75°F) from summer heat, but visitor numbers drop. The daily booking requirements and capacity controls end on October 15. By November, the weather cools to highs of 18°C (64°F), and rainfall increases, bringing occasional autumn storms.

❄️ Winter (December – February)

Winter is mild, damp, and quiet. Daily highs average 14°C to 15°C (57°F to 59°F), and nightly lows drop to 6°C (43°F). The sea temperature reaches its minimum of 13°C (55°F) in February. While winter is unsuitable for swimming, the clear, cool days are excellent for coastal trekking, photography, and exploring the rocky headlands without the summer heat.

🌱 Spring (March – May)

Spring is characterized by blooming wildflowers along the dunes and rising temperatures. Highs increase from 16°C (61°F) in March to 22°C (72°F) in May. The sea water remains cool, but sunbathing is popular in sheltered spots. May is an excellent month for active outdoor sports, such as kayaking or hiking the ancient Roman Coast Road, before summer temperatures arrive.

Wind Patterns & The Mistral Shield

Wind patterns are a major factor in planning a beach day in southern Sardinia. The dominant wind in the region is the Mistral (Maestrale), a strong, cool northwesterly wind. When the Mistral blows, it can cause rough, choppy seas and drop the sea water temperature rapidly at most beaches along the coast.

Spiaggia di Tuerredda is nestled in a deep, south-facing cove bounded by Capo Malfatano and Capo Spartivento. These elevated rocky headlands provide excellent natural shelter from the northwesterly winds. While neighboring beaches like those in Chia or Pula face the full force of the Mistral, Tuerredda remains flat, calm, and clear. Swimmers and snorkelers can safely explore the bay and the offshore islet even when the rest of the coast is too windy.

In contrast, when the Scirocco wind blows from the southeast (primarily in late summer), it enters the mouth of the cove directly. This wind can bring warm, humid air, minor wave action, and temporary deposits of seagrass (Posidonia), which is a natural part of the marine ecosystem.
